Horizon Nuclear Power

Horizon Nuclear Power is a UK energy company developing a new generation of nuclear power stations. A wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi,Ltd., we plan to provide at least 5,400MW of new power station capacity to the UK, enough to power around 10 million homes.

Our projects will create up to 850 permanent jobs during operation at each of our sites on Anglesey and Oldbury, with a construction workforce of around 4,000 workers for the majority of the time. Up to 9,000 workers will be needed at the peak of construction. This investment will boost the country’s low carbon power supplies and help develop local skills and new prospects for British suppliers.

HS2 will be a high-speed railway connecting London to Birmingham from 2026, Crewe by 2027 and then Manchester and Leeds from 2033. Construction is starting on Phase One which will link London and Birmingham by 2026. Phase Two will run from the West Midlands to Manchester in the west and Leeds in the east completing the network by 2033.

Infrastructure and Projects Authority

We are the government’s centre of expertise for infrastructure and major projects, reporting to the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury. We support the successful delivery of all types of infrastructure and major projects: ranging from railways, schools, hospitals and housing, to defence, IT and major transformation programmes. The IPA works with government and industry to ensure infrastructure and major projects are delivered efficiently and effectively, and to improve performance over time. Our purpose is to continuously improve the way infrastructure and major projects are delivered, in order to support government priorities and improve people’s lives. Our organisation was formed on 1 January 2016 when it brought together Infrastructure UK (IUK) and the Major Projects Authority (MPA). We are responsible for the overall project delivery system; the projects, people and processes that together create the right environment for successful delivery. Our responsibilities include:

  • supporting and de-risking the most complex and high risk projects
  • developing the skills and capability of the people who deliver projects
  • overseeing the project life-cycle from policy, initiation and financing to independent assurance

Midlands Connect

Midlands Connect, in collaboration with central government, brings together local authorities and local enterprise partnerships from across the Midlands.

Together, the Midlands Connect Partnership and the Department for Transport have developed a transport strategy that identifies the major infrastructure projects needed to improve the connectivity of our region’s key locations so we can help drive economic growth and power the Midlands Engine.

Sir John Peace, chairman of Midlands Connect and Midlands Engine, said: “We sit at the heart of the UK’s transport network and therefore an investment in this region’s transport will have a remarkable benefit to the whole country and create a positive ripple effect to boost the development of industry, skills and infrastructure.

“This Strategy will help to secure the further infrastructure funding needed to lay the groundwork for improved connectivity across the Midlands, bringing the East and West closer together and opening the region’s businesses to the world.”
