Sellafield has been nearly 80 years in the making. A pioneer for the UK’s nuclear industry, it supported national defence, generated electricity for nearly half a century, and developed the ability to safely manage nuclear waste. Sellafield covers 6 square kilometres and is home to more than 200 nuclear facilities and the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world.
Today we are faced with the challenge of cleaning-up the legacy of the site’s early operations, including some of the most hazardous nuclear facilities in Europe
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) plays a vital role in supporting our Armed Forces by building, maintaining and servicing the infrastructure that the men and women who serve our country need to live, work, train and deploy on operations.
DIO is responsible for managing £3.25 billion annual investment into the defence estate in the UK and overseas, and manages an estate valued at circa £35 billion. It does this through a range of term, framework, PFI and other supply contracts that make DIO one of the largest contracting organisations in Government.
CompeteFor is a free service enables businesses to compete for contract opportunities linked to major public and private sector buying organisations. It opens up the supply chains of major capital infrastructure projects and national buying programmes and is supported by London’s leading business representative organisations, London Business Network, Transport for London and London Chamber of Commerce.

The Commission is the body responsible for providing independent analysis and advice to the Government to ensure the UK meets its long-term infrastructure needs. Its role is to support sustainable economic growth across all regions of the UK, improve competitiveness, and improve quality of life. In doing so, it aims to be the UK’s most credible, forward-thinking and influential voice on infrastructure policy and strategy. It publishes a National Infrastructure Assessment once in every Parliament setting out its assessment of long-term infrastructure needs, with recommendations to the Government – the first of which was published in July 2018. The Commission also undertakes in-depth studies into the UK’s most pressing infrastructure challenges and monitors the Government’s progress in delivering infrastructure projects and programmes recommended by the Commission. More information about its work can be found on its website nic.org.uk or on Twitter @NatInfraCom
Crown Commercial Service
We’re one of the biggest public procurement organisations in Europe. We help organisations across the whole of the public sector find the right commercial solutions covering everything from locum doctors to police cars. Our customers include NHS, local authorities, police forces, schools, colleges, government departments and charities across the UK.
Transport for the North
We are England’s first Sub-national Transport Body. We were formed to transform the transport system across the North of England, providing the infrastructure needed to drive economic growth.
As a partnership, we bring the North’s 20 local transport authorities and business leaders together with Network Rail, Highways England, and HS2 Ltd, and work with Central Government. We enable the North to speak with one voice on the transport infrastructure investment needed to drive transformational growth and rebalance the UK economy.
We will not replace or replicate the work of existing local transport bodies. Our role is to add strategic value by ensuring that funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are informed by local knowledge and requirements. This fits with the devolution agenda and we will draw powers down from central government rather than up from local government.
